He’s got DNA to harvest, a disease to cure, a scion to form, and the not-insignificant task of coming out to a roomful of human PhDs who are definitely about to ask him if he can turn into a bat....

Despite the initial trepidation, most of them have been a success. They do follow some general rules, though: for early entries, the Star Trek movie rule applies, where every other one is good. This pattern stops holding true around Gods & Monsters – after that, they’re mostly at least adequate, but the bad ones are giant turds. Also, the quality of the movie is almost always in proportion to the quality of the comic it was based off of....

From executive producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and director Matt Thompson (Archer), America: The Motion Picture is a gory, loud, and exceedingly stupid animated comedy that stretches the one-note joke of “what if the Founding Fathers were dude-bros?” into a numbing 98 minutes. Using a tone similar to Archer, but without the clever quips and genre takedowns, America may have worked as a silly short YouTube video or a half-hour pilot, but stretched to feature length it is grating and far too self-satisfied with its own crass toilet humor....

James Wan seems to be signaling that his once-unlikely comic book movie franchise, Aquaman, is getting an injection of genre themes that only a directorial maestro of movie scares such as himself can administer. Indeed, while little to nothing is known about the 2022-scheduled sequel outside of its titular reference to a “Lost Kingdom” (more on that in a moment), his name-drop, made in an interview with Total Film, evoking the seemingly-random Planet of the Vampires certainly feels like a wild, left-field tease, especially for a sequel that has been described in the past as having a more serious tone than its predecessor....

What makes it all the more interesting is that Snyder didn’t direct the movie either: Schweighöfer did. A director and producer in his native Germany as well as an actor, Schweighöfer finds himself helming his first major international production for streaming giant Netflix under the production banner of Zack and Deborah Snyder, who are coming off both the success of Army of the Dead and the massive publicity behind their restoration of Zack Snyder’s Justice League....

Avengers: Endgame saw Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) sacrifice herself at Vormir to obtain the Soul Stone, helping to undo the Thanos snap which saw 50% of the universe disintegrate. It was a noble act, and a choice on Nat’s behalf – she and Clint Barton fight, not to sacrifice each other, but to be the one to die, and ultimately Natasha wins. We might not like it, but hey, at least it was Nat’s will....
